Sticks and Stones Background Music

Background music is a great addition to most role-playing games. There are a number of forum posts with excellent suggestions for Deadlands and other Savage games.

Sticks and Stones is no exception, though I have had difficulty finding a lot of really good “prehistoric” music. There are lots of songs out there about cavemen and dinosaurs, but most are pretty bad (even by my standards) or geared to young children.

So, I will present some ideas, but I would love to hear yours. Soundtrack or individual song ideas would be great – please email me to add to the list.

1. Crash Test Dummies: In the Days of the Caveman – my all time favorite “prehistoric” song.
2. Ralph Covert: Cavemen! and Dinosaur Rumble – okay, so this is really children’s music, but Ralph’s songs work very well for Sticks & Stones. Okay, maybe that says something about the game . . .
3. Many artists: Also Sprach Zarathustra – the overture played during “the dawn of man” in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Great for opening the game, or during a dramatic moment (especially if it is enacted in slow motion).
4. Barenaked Ladies: Another Postcard – okay, so this really has nothing to do with prehistoric gaming, but it works.
5. Jimmy Castor: Troglodyte – a classic (though not a personal favorite)
6. Los Straitjackets: Caveman – okay, now we’re getting sort of desperate. But this one is not too bad.
7. Hooverphonic: Pink Fluffy Dinosaurs – another stretch, but I like the sound. Not for use during an exciting part of the game (the song is actually about being hyptonized)!
8. Eat Static: Caveman – interesting, but I don’t really recommend it.
9. John Stano: Dinosaur Bones – a folk song that has a nice sound, and at least talks about dinosaur bones.
10. Was (not Was): Walk the Dinosaur – AHHHH!!! I’m starting to get into disco! I’ll stop now . . .
